One April morning Tomi Leppänen and his friends pack their Saab99 with obsolete CRT televisions and a couple of plastic bags full of dubious cables and connectors. The VHS Club is on a one-day-mission to preach the gospel of karaoke and tacky vhs-aesthetics to as many Tampere suburban pubs as possible. The pub regulars don’t know what’s coming and the VHS Club might really need to fight for their attention over an ice hockey match blaring from the modern tv sets of the pubs. The main act of the vhs tour is Tomi’s alter ego Kalevi Suopursu and his Karaoke Show, a show where Kalevi sings his own melancholic songs on karaoke. The documentary touches themes of identity, community, poverty and happiness. Premiered in Oulu Music Video Festival in August 2022.
